Claims clearing houses provide the single station ability to transmit claims to large numbers of payers electronically. They act as post offices that distribute claims to various electronic mailboxes (i.e., claims payers). They also accept claims transmitted in one format and reformat them to different payer specifications. Clearinghouses perform a valuable function in making EDI work in many industries.
The cost of using clearinghouses has declined sharply in recent years and will decline further as standards become accepted, volume grows, and competition intensifies.
